REVISED-Scholarly Journal Summary

Powers, A.. (2008). A Spy in the House of Love. Women & Music, 12, 40-43,124. Retrieved December 9, 2009, from GenderWatch (GW). (Document ID: 1603316741).

This article was a very fascinating look into the world of a feminist music critic. She talks from her point of view, as a budding music critic in a world so focused on a feminist ideal that can never be achieved. She goes on to talk about how rock music releases the pent-up sexual tension that America keeps so firmly under wraps, which is why it may be offensive to many people. Her opinion as a pop rock critic, who is also feminist is that "For me, then, embracing the role of feminist pop critic means learning to be comfortable unsettled. It means calling out sexism but also understanding that sexism is only one force in the complex web of impulses and ideas contained within any particular performance and that the way each works to enhance and diffuse the others is what's most interesting and potentially liberatory." It's about balance, between remaining your own woman and losing yourself to the intense seduction of the music.
