Non-MUSE event #1

The first non-MUSE event I attended was a club meeting. I was thinking of joining the kendo and naginata club here on campus, and decided to go to one of their trial sessions. It was fascinating learning about this ancient weaponry. Kendo is by far the more popular of the two, and is is the ancient Japanese samurai art of the sword. It is intense, and requires a two-handled grip. This makes it more awkward to use, but much more powerful in blows. The naginata started as a woman's weapon. Japanese women were taught to use this spear-like weapon to defend their homes. It is typically a five-foot pole with a curved katana blade on the top of it, usually extending it out to six feet. It is a little unweildy to use but it is very graceful when one learns to use it right. I ended up not joining the club due to time restraints, but it was a very fascinating information session.
